Culture and Sport

Our culture and traditions have been impacted heavily by the waves of different cultures that have come to our country. However, even in the parts of Australia where colonial impacts were the most severe, our culture has survived and continues to thrive and evolve.

Sport is recognised as a potentially powerful force in Indigenous community life. Taking part in organised sport, arts or community group activities fosters self-esteem, social interaction and the development of skills and teamwork. Early participation can lead to stronger bodies, the prevention of chronic diseases and improved learning and academic performance, even reductions in substance misuse, self-harm, and crime.
